Hispanic Heritage Month: September 15 - October 15
Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates Hispanic American achievements in science, literature, the arts, and more. The month aims to highlight the contributions, cultures, and traditions of Americans who trace their ancestry to Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Spanish-speaking nations of the Caribbean.
In 1968, Congress set aside a week for this observance and 20 years later expanded it to be a month-long celebration. Hispanic Heritage Month stretches from September 15 to October 15. The timing is historically significant in order to highlight independence day of several countries in Latin America, South America, and the Caribbean.
- September 15: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (independence from Spain)
- September 16: Mexico (independence from Spain)
- September 18th: Chile (independence from Spain)
- September 21st: Belize (independence from UK)
